Asset Recovery

Shares transferred to the IEPF can still be claimed.

When dividends remain unclaimed for seven consecutive years, the corresponding shares and dividends are transferred to the IEPF Authority. Eligible shareholders and legal heirs may be able to initiate a claim for recovery.

Overview

What the IEPF is

The Investor Education and Protection Fund is a fund established by the Government of India under the Companies Act, 2013. Where dividends remain unclaimed for seven consecutive years, companies are required to transfer the corresponding shares and dividends to the IEPF Authority.

This is a transfer, not a forfeiture. The fund exists to safeguard investor interests and to maintain a record of unclaimed financial assets. Eligible shareholders and legal heirs may claim what was transferred, through a prescribed process.

That process is documentation-driven. Most claims that stall do so because of a gap between the records held by the company and the identification a claimant can currently produce — an old address, a name spelled differently, a folio never updated after a marriage or a death.

Timeline

How long an IEPF claim takes

Processing timelines depend on the completeness of documentation, the verification requirements that apply to the case, the nature of the claim, and the processing timelines of the relevant authorities.

Each case carries different requirements. A straightforward claim by an original holder with current KYC is not comparable to a legal heir claim requiring succession documentation, and we will not present the two as though they are.
